Obstetric Physician

A specialist in medical complications of pregnancy and the management of pre-existing medical problems during pregnancy.

Dr Lucy Mackillop trained at Oxford University Medical School. She did her post graduate training in medicine in London gaining MRCP before moving to Sydney, Australia to take up an advanced training post in nephrology and obstetric medicine. On returning to the UK she completed her training in Obstetric Medicine at Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea Hospital, London before taking up her current post, in 2008, of Consultant in Maternal Medicine at the John Radcliffe Women’s Centre in Oxford.

Dr Mackillop is one of only four Obstetric Physicians in the UK and specialises in medical conditions unique to pregnancy as well as the management of pre-existent medical disorders occurring during pregnancy.

Lucy is a mother of 2 (Lily aged 6 and Freddie aged 3) and understands personally the excitement and anxiety of pregnancy and motherhood.

Clinical Interests
Dr Mackillop jointly runs the maternal high-risk maternity service at the John Radcliffe Women’s Centre, Oxford. She is a regular lecturer on medical conditions in pregnancy at national and international conferences. Dr Mackillop is passionate about obstetric medicine and continues to campaign for better recognition of the importance of pre-pregnancy advice for women with medical conditions and for women who are at risk of a complicated pregnancy.

Dr Mackillop has co-authored a national guideline; the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist greentop guidelines for the prevention of venous thromboembolism in pregnancy (PDF download) and a European guideline on the management of inflammatory bowel disease in pregnancy (PDF download). She has also contributed to the National Insitute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidance ‘Venous thromboembolism – reducing the risk’ (PDF download)

Dr Mackillop has written seven peer-reviewed papers and review articles, including articles on

She has also co-authored two book chapters on liver disease in pregnancy and thromboprophylaxis in pregnancy. Dr Mackillop has also written a multi-media educational module for UK doctors on the approach to breathlessness in pregnancy.
